What the survey can tell us

“Current use” means use on at least one of the past 30 days. These are estimates for U.S. high school students in grades 9 to 12, not all teenagers. “Any tobacco product” already includes e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, including products without tobacco leaf. Categories overlap, so their percentages cannot be added.

The chart compares different samples of students each year. It does not track individual switching, nicotine dose or health effects. Cannabis vaping is outside this measure. The 2022 to 2025 trends are statistically significant for all three series; their smaller 2024 to 2025 changes are not.

Confidence intervals and survey limitations

Intervals are 95% confidence intervals from the published complex-survey analysis. The 2025 overall response rate was 29.7%, and collection ended six weeks early. Results may be affected by nonresponse and self-reporting. Other oral nicotine products were added to the overall category in 2023, expanding its scope after 2022.
