Counts, source and interpretation

Source: CelesTrak public SATCAT, retrieved 18 October 2026. Included: Earth-centred ORB entries with no decay date and published altitudes satisfying 0 ≤ perigee ≤ apogee < 2,000 km. Band and radius use the midpoint of apogee and perigee. This is an altitude summary, not an instantaneous position. Elliptical orbits can cross the band boundaries.

Each miniature represents approximately 750 objects, rounded to the nearest whole symbol separately within each category and band. Representative altitudes are quantiles of the corresponding catalogue records. The percentages and counts use every included record, without rounding the source counts. Angular placement, Earth size and object sizes are illustrative; altitude spacing is consistent. These are not individual spacecraft locations or collision probabilities.

“Spacecraft” means catalogue PAY (payload), including working and inactive spacecraft. DEB means the catalogue's other-debris category. “Other” combines rocket bodies and unknown classifications. Most small debris, uncatalogued objects and unpublished objects are absent.

Earth and hardware are generated illustrative artwork, not observation data or photographs of particular catalogued objects. Fonts: Michroma and Atomic Age. See hardware artwork and prompts and Earth artwork and prompts.
